In April or at the end of March British people celebrate Easter Day. Easter in Britain has a lot of traditions and habits.

They celebrate it as the start of spring or a religious festival. In Great Britain it is time to give and to get presents.

All the families colour Easter eggs and put them into green, yellow or pink baskets.

Easter lasts for a week. The three most important days are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Maundy Thursday Ceremony takes place in Britain every year.

The Queen gives Maundy Money to a group of pensioners. This tradition dates from the 13 th century.

On Friday before Easter British people enjoy the traditional Good Friday breakfast of hot cross buns. They are special hot cakes with a cross on the top.

The Egg is a symbol of new life.

The Cross represents Christ’s victory over death.

The Easter Rabbit Bunny is really a hare. It was the favourite animal of Eostre, the spring goddess, so Bunny represents love and growth.

Rabbits, chicks, lambs and flowers, especially lilies and daffodils, are associated with Easter because they are born in spring.

The custom of decorating Easter eggs and exchanging them as gifts was started by the ancient Egyptians. Then this tradition became popular with the people of Eastern Europe.

Nowadays people give each other Easter eggs and rabbits made of chocolate.

You can buy them at any sweet shop in the weeks before Easter. Chocolate eggs are usually hollow or filled with sweets and they are wrapped in silver paper.

On Easter Sunday people eat a traditional roast dinner with lamb, potatoes and vegetables.

They also eat chocolate Easter eggs and traditional Simnel cake.

Children like Easter very much because it is a tasty holiday. They play funny games and sing merry songs.

British children believe that Easter Rabbit brings Easter eggs and hides them for finding on Easter morning.

Bunnies are funny,

Large and small.

But I like chocolate bunnies

Most of all!

On Easter morning children like to play “Egg Hunt”. They take the baskets and look for Easter eggs in the garden or in the house.

They collect the eggs into their baskets and have a lot of fun.

Another favourite game is “Egg Rolling”. Children roll hard-boiled eggs down a hill.

There are also Easter parades in the UK and in America.

People wear Easter bonnets decorated with spring flowers and eggs.

Children wear funny Easter bonnets, too.

Pupils have Easter holidays at the end of March and in the first half of April. They go back to school after Easter.

People send greeting cards and wish “Happy Easter!” to each other.

Easter is a happy holiday for children and grown-ups.
