The United States of America

There is no man in the world who has never heard about America. The USA is a highly developed industrial country. It is the world’s leading producer of copper and oil and the world’s second producer of iron ore and coal. The USA is the fourth largest country in the world after Russia, Canada and China, and has many natural resources, animal types, beautiful and interesting places, which are nowhere in the world.

People travel to America to find a good work, to study in colleges, to look Hollywood stars and see interesting places like a Jefferson Memorial, Supreme Court, Washington Monument, the Statue of Liberty, museums and many others. To tell the truth I have not seen in American sights, but I found this information and included it in this work.

I’ve chosen this theme of my report, because I’m very interested in America and American life. I heard many interesting facts and read a lot of texts about this country, but I have never been there. Maybe I’ll go there in the future. So, I found information about the United States and decided to fit it into this report.

The USA is one of the most powerful and highly developed countries of the world. It is situated in the central part of the North American continent. Its western coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

The total area of the USA is over 9 million square kilometres.

The USA consists of three separate parts. They are the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska and the rest major part of the USA. There are fifty states and the District of Columbia. The states differ very much in size, population and economical development.

The continental part of the USA consists of the highland regions and two lowland regions. There are many mountains especially in the west and southwest: the Rocky Mountains, the Appalachian Mountains, the Cordillera.

The main rivers of the USA are the Mississippi, the longest river in the world (7, 330 km) and the Hudson river.

The climate of the USA differs greatly from one part of the country to another. The coldest climate is in the northern part. The south has a subtropical climate, with temperature as high as 49 degrees in summer.

The population of the United States of America is about 300 million people, who are called Americans. Most of the people live in towns and the population of the countryside is becoming smaller and smaller.

In America there are representatives of all racial and national groups. The USA is often called “a Melting Pot”.

American Houses

The majority оf Americans live in or near large cities, but a small living-town is still widespread. A suburb (a small community near a big city) offers the advantages of a safe life. Americans who live in towns and cities often move. For the typical American family, home may be at different place every five or six years. Some people move because they have found a new job. Other people move because they want a bigger or a smaller home. In American suburbs, families come and go all the time. But sometimes the American pioneering spirit and desire for adventure inspire the move.

About two-thirds of Americans live in homes or apartments that they own. American homes are some of the biggest and best in the world. Many have a garage one or two car, a big modern kitchen, a living room, and a playroom for the children. Upstairs there are two bathrooms and three or four bedrooms.

Some families have two homes. They have one house or apartment in the city or suburbs. They live and work there. But they have another home near the sea or in the mountains. They go to their second home on weekends and for vacations.

Seventy percent of Americans buy the house they live in. They are lucky. But thirty percent cannot buy a house or an apartment. Some of them rent their home from a landlord.

Some landlords are good, but some are not. Windows break, roofs get old, and the landlord does not always help. The poorest people live in "public housing" apartments. These apartments are not like rich American homes. People do not like to live in public housing. They are afraid of thieves and drug sellers. But many people rent their living quarters. Some high-rise apartments are very expensive and elegant, but many are built for moderate or even law-income families.

More than million Americans live in mobile homes, living quarters built on wheels. They can be moved, but are generally brought to a site that becomes more or less permanent. Then the wheels are removed and the home is attached to the ground. Because they cost less than usual houses, mobile homes are especially popular with young couples and retired couples with a limited income.

Americans are always trying to make their homes better. They take a lot of time to buy furniture and make their homes beautiful. They buy books and magazines about houses and furniture. They work hard on their homes in the evenings and on weekends.

Americans like to think the United States is a young country, but really it has a long and interesting history. You can see some of its history in the styles of the houses. The lovely pueblo houses of Native American villages, the old pioneer log cabins, the plantation houses in the South, the beautiful colonial homes of the Northeast — they are all a part of American history. They are part of modem America too, because people copy the old styles in new houses. Полную информацию смотрите в файле.

The capital of the USA is Washington. It is situated in the District of Columbia. Washington is a beautiful administrative city with no industry. It was named in honor of the first president whose name was George Washington. In 1787 Washington was chosen president of the first republic. The state of Washington is the only state named after President. There the giant Washington Monument stands. Many cities, parks, streets, bridges, lakes, and schools wear his name.

Washington is not the largest city in the USA. It has a population about 1 million people. Washington is a one-industry town. That industry is government.

Washington has many historical places. The largest and tallest among the buildings is the Capitol with its great House of Representatives and the Senate chamber.

The White House is the President's residence. All American presidents except George Washington have lived in the White House. It was built in 1799.

Not far from the Capitol is the Washington Monument, which looks like a very big pencil. It rises 160 metres and is hollow inside.

The biggest cities of the USA are New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and other. New York is the largest city in the USA and the biggest seaport. There are five districts in the city: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Richmond. Manhattan is the central and the oldest part of the city. Its population together with the population of its suburbs is 16 million people. Among the inhabitants of New York one can meet people of almost all nationalities. A traveller who visits New York for the first time wonders at the modern architecture and the Statue of Liberty.

The USA is a highly developed industrial state. Its agriculture is also highly developed.

There are coal-mines in the Cordillera Mountains, in the Kansas City region. Iron is mined near the Great Lakes. America has rich oil-fields in California, Texas and some other regions.

The USA has a highly developed motor-car industry. Such companies as Ford and the General Motors are known world-wide.

It is a federal country. The flag of America is called "Stars and Stripes". The 50 stars — white on a blue field — represent the 50 states, 13 stripes represent 13 original English colonies, which in 1776 became independent of England.

The eagle became the national emblem of the country in 1782. It has an olive branch (a symbol of peace) and arrows (a symbol of strength). You can see the eagle on the back of a dollar bill.

Conclusion

In conclusion of my work, I’d like to say that the United States of America is an interesting country, where you can spend your time. If you visit every state, city and town, you will be able to find something unforgettable and amazing.

The USA has a rich history and culture, customs and traditions. Sociable and friendly, well-educated people live there.

I haven’t chosen my future profession yet. My favourite subjects at school are literature and English. I understand the importance of knowledge of a foreign language. It helps people from different countries to communicate with each other, to read foreign literature in the original, to broaden their minds.
